Takeaway Box Cooking Parsnips

Takeaway Box Cooking Parsnips

Takeaway box cooking parsnips is the easiest and fastest way to cook fresh parsnips in under 5 minutes.  Your parsnips can be ready to eat in a few minutes, reducing the amount of time to cook and reducing the washing up to be done!

Want to cook a single parsnip? I very rarely cook more than one parsnip at a time as I like large, fat, parsnips – I prefer parsnip rounds to parsnip lengths, but this method works with any shape.  The parsnips will steam in their own flavour, producing fast and tasty, nutrient-rich, parsnips in a fraction of the time compared to boiling in a saucepan of water.

You can also use this method to kickstart your roast parsnips, or to make a parsnip soup quickly.  Using a takeaway box for cooking parsnips means you can quickly cook parsnips either ready to eat, or ready to add into another recipe you’re trying to shortcut.

Microwave Parsnips Method:

  1. Peel and slice your parsnips to the size/shape you want.

  2. Place the parsnips in a microwave safe takeaway box (the plastic, lidded, variety).
  3. Add a splash of water, just about ¼” or ½cm and fit the lid to the takeaway box, leaving one corner undone to allow excess steam to escape.
  4. Microwave on high power (800 watts) for 2 minutes; turn the parsnips over and microwave for a further 1-2 minutes. Turn the parsnips over and test how close they are to being cooked – and microwave for a further 1-2 minutes as required.

Leftovers, or Cooking Ahead:

Sometimes I’ll cook the parsnips and then just drain off the water, replace the lid and pop the box into the fridge as I’ve cooked the parsnips ready to be reheated later, or in another recipe.  You can even freeze the parsnips now if you wish.

Whether you’re dealing with leftover parsnips, or are cooking ahead, once they are cooked you simply need to get the lid onto the takeaway box and pop it in the fridge.  Parsnips will keep for 3-4 days in a lidded takeaway box in the fridge – and if you still don’t fancy them, then open the freezer and toss the whole box in there.  Ideal, out of sight, out of mind 🙂

To reheat parsnips from the fridge, simply pop the corner of the takeaway box, add a tablespoon of water, then microwave on high power (800 watts) for 1-1½ minutes.
