I love crumpets!  Toasted crumpets with a topping are an easy breakfast, a snack, lunch, or food for suppertime. Simply adding a little orange marmalade to the top of a toasted crumpet can really hit the spot. Crumpets are a great snack food, food on a whim, an answer to that nagging question “hmmmm what do I fancy?”

No butter required, just spoon a teaspoon of orange marmalade onto each toasted crumpet.

I’ve usually got crumpets in the house – they freeze!  I try to always have one jar of marmalade in the house – only ever one jar of marmalade is allowed to be open at a time though, else the kitchen just becomes cluttered with opened jars languishing!  I tend to just buy cheap own brand crumpets and the marmalade will typically be 27-30p/jar own brand too.  I want a quick taste hit on a budget, not a gastronomic experience day 🙂

I’ll eat these any time of the day because they’re hot, easy and tasty!  Not a fresh ingredient in sight 🙂 Two frozen crumpets, defrosted then toasted, topped with a spoon of orange marmalade from a jar.  It doesn’t really get much easier than this!

2022 Price Update:

Taking a quick look at prices in 2022, with the recent “cost of living crisis”, own brand, supermarket, crumpets are typically 25p for a pack of six. Two crumpets cost just 8.3p!

Own brand marmalade has increased in the last few weeks and now typically costs about the same price, 30p per jar. Below are some price checks done in May 2022:

• Tesco Stockwell Orange Marmalade, 454 grams, 30p. Prepared with 20g of fruit per 100g.
• Morrisons Savers Orange Marmalade, 454 grams, 30p. Prepared with 20g of fruit per 100g.
• Sainsburys Hubbards Medium Cut Orange Marmalade, 454 grams, 27p. Prepared with 20g of fruit per 100g.

Portion size is up to you, but you should be able to get at least 20 servings from one jar, making the following costs:

Crumpets = 8.3p; Marmalade = 1.5p. TOTAL: 10.3p for two crumpets topped with marmalade

2023 Price Update: 80% Food Inflation!

Crumpets have now moved into the “luxury goods” section!

On 1 June 2023 I noticed a pack of 6 crumpets costs 45p now. I hesitated before grabbing a pack.

Up from 25p a year ago, to 45p now. That’s Crumpet Food Inflation of 80%

I did still, reluctantly, buy crumpets today, but they used to be a grabbable staple for those quick snack meals.

Own Brand Marmalade is now typically 69p/jar (Aldi Grandessa Marmalade; Tesco Stockwell Marmalade; Sainsburys Hubbard’s Foodstore Marmalade)

Last Year -v- Today:

Last year’s cost of marmalade on two crumpets was 10.3p.

This year’s cost is: Crumpets = 15p; Marmalade = 3.5p. TOTAL: 18.5p for two crumpets topped with marmalade

That’s a food inflation increase of 80% in a year 🙁

How Many Crumpets is a Portion?

I always cook two crumpets, topped with butter or jam or marmalade.

Two crumpets, for me, is a light meal.

Others might feel a pack is a portion and toast all six 🙂
