I love beans on toast, but it can quickly become a belly filling tasty meal by tweaking it just a little.  I know some people dislike eating crusts – and I used to be the same – but you can’t waste them!

You can use up bread crusts by toasting one crust and piling it high with a simple toast topper topping of baked beans and cheddar cheese.  I’ts fast, cheap, cheerful, filling and good for you!  Baked beans count as one of your five a day.

This is very filling and I’ll often eat cheese and beans on toast as a main meal, or a brunch to tide me over.

Use a microwave to heat up the beans in a mug and you’ve minimal washing up too.

Ingredients:

  • 1 crust of bread
  • ⅓ tin of baked beans
  • 25 grams cheddar cheese, grated

Method:

  1. Toast the crust in the toaster so it’s the colour you like!
  2. Put the baked beans into a microwave safe small dish or a mug and microwave for 1 minute, stir, then microwave for ½ a minute and stir again.  For larger quantities, stir and microwave until the beans are hot enough!
  3. Put the toasted crust onto the plate, spoon your piping hot baked beans over the top, then add your cheese on top of that

No Need to Use Butter

There’s no need to butter the toast, it’ll be covered in the toast toppings – so give it a miss and save calories!

Menu Cost – 20p:

Using supermarket own brands, this will cost about 20p.

2022 Price Update

How much does beans on toast cost now? With recent price increases, how does beans on toast now stack up for an economy meal?

Budget range bread is still holding strong, with a loaf of Aldi sliced white bread costing 36p for the Everyday Essentials range and 55p for the Village Bakery loaf of bread (20 slices, 800 grams). Two crusts would cost 3.6p at the cheaper pricepoint.

Baked beans have increased in price, from 99p for four cans of Corale Baked Beans to £1.09 for four. If you use half a can, that’s 13.6p for the baked beans. Aldi are now selling a cheaper range of baked beans, at 22p/can, half a can costing 11p.

25 grams of cheddar cheese is at £4.73/Kg, making the cheese cost 11.8p.

I must admit I didn’t take strict price notes when I first wrote this post, but the cost of baked beans and cheddar cheese on toast is now: 3.6+11+11.8 = 26.4p

If you’re on a budget, that cheese might have to go! Just baked beans on toast is 3.6+11 = 14.6p.

I do love beans on toast… it’s more of a staple in my household, a filling treat.
