Tesco Soft Scoop Neapolitan Ice Cream Review

Tesco Soft Scoop Neapolitan Ice Cream Review

With a heatwave predicted, I thought it’d be a good time to buy a tub of ice-cream – rather than regretting that decision when I was melting in my chair!

I didn’t want a premium brand, or a special ice-cream, I just wanted a budget ice cream – so was drawn to the neapolitan ice cream at Tesco because it gave three different flavours in one tub: Chocolate, vanilla and strawberry ice cream.

I’ve not actually eaten neopolitan ice cream for many years, so thought I’d give it a whirl.

This is a 2 litre tub (I also thought the empty container might come in handy, although, like usual, I’m not sure how yet!).

In the end, I didn’t open the ice cream tub as the promised heat wave was cut short by storms and rain… again.

Ice Cream Review:

As you can see, once you’ve got the lid off, there are three separate sections for the three ice creams: chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. I think this is good as you can pick out the flavour you want easily – my memory from neapolitan in the past was of the chequer-board brown, yellow, pink, where you really had to have them all.

Tesco Soft Scoop Neapolitan Ice Cream Review

It is a soft scoop, which was good as I was serving it up using a flimsy spoon. My portion sizes tend to be small (I can always go back for more if I want – and often do).

The 2 litre tub cost £1.80, 9p/100ml. It’s certainly one of the cheapest ice creams Tesco sell. A portion of ice cream should be 100ml, so the tub is 20 servings. I’d guess my portion was about 100ml, but I wasn’t weighing or measuring it. The Tesco individual choc ices are 70ml, so it could be made to go further if you wanted. At 20 servings that makes a portion 10p.

But, how did it taste?

I am afraid to say I was disappointed. “It is ice cream” is about the only good thing that can be said. The flavours were simply disappointing; the flavours were weak. There was no instant “OMG” moment when I took my first (or any) taste.

Yes, it looks like ice cream, but it doesn’t taste how I’d want ice cream to taste.

If you let it melt a bit – if you can bear to have it sitting there until it’s very soft and half melted, it does seem to taste a little better…. but not great.

Would I this Tesco Neapolitan ice cream again? Would I recommend it to a friend?

No. No I wouldn’t. I’ll take my chances with “any other flavour/brand” in the future – there are plenty of other shops selling budget range ice creams to try!
