Cheese & Onion Slice

This cheese & onion slice was made quickly by using ready rolled pastry, which I’d already cut into handy single portion flat slices.

When you buy ready rolled pastry it comes in a roll. I’ve no use for an entire pastry sheet most of the time, so will simply cut the whole roll up into handy slices and freeze them individually: Make Individual Pastry Sheets

These small pastry sheets are then ideal to make a quick savoury or filled baked slice. Once frozen you can use just 1/4 of a sheet to make a small snack, or use two slices to make a more substantial meal.

Ingredients:

  • Two pieces of ready rolled pastry, pieces you’ve cut down into quarters (about 10x25cm each), not whole sheets!
  • 75g grams of cheese (quantity by eye)
  • ½ small onion, sliced and chopped
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Method

  1. Allow the pastry sheet to defrost if you’ve frozen it.
  2. Spread the cheese and onion on one of the pastry sheet quarters, leaving a gap at the edges for crimping. Sprinkle with salt and pepper if you wish.
  3. Lay the second pastry slice quarter over the cheese and onion filling.
  4. Use a fork to crimp the edges.

Serve on its own, or with chips, or chips and beans 🙂

Optional: You can egg wash or milk wash the pastry if you wish, I tend to not bother as “it’s just for me”.

Place the cheese & onion slice onto a baking tray and bake it in the oven at 180° C for about 20-25 minutes until it’s the colour you’d like it to be. I cooked this cheese & onion slice in my toaster oven.

I’ll keep a couple of frozen sheets in the freezer a few times a year, just as a quick way to make a quick small pie or slice to use up leftovers I’ve got. Alternative fillings might be cheese & beans, curry, chilli, bombay potatoes, or even bolognaise filling, sausage & onion, even kebab meat and chilli!

Using Just One Quarter of a Pastry Sheet

I also used just one quarter slice to make a smaller cheese and onion slice – simply place the cheese and onion on one half of the pastry and fold it over. I was “in a rush” so it didn’t look elegant.

Served with chips and beans!
