Sainsburys Own Brand Angel Delight: Whippy Dessert

Sainsburys have their own brand version of Angel Delight, which they call Whippy Dessert. I’ve always been a fan of all Angel Delight own brands, so will grab a couple if I’m in any supermarket. They’re so handy as a quick and easy cold dessert.

The trouble I have with Sainsburys is I’m rarely in there! So can lose track of who sells what. But I’ve taken a look at the range and these are now on my list to get round to buying.

As I’ve moved around, I’ve typically just used the nearest 2-3 supermarkets and I moved from being close to Sainsburys about four years ago!

Cheap Dessert Ideas

If you’re looking for a cheap dessert, at 50p for the packet; these days it’s the cost of the milk that makes them a little more expensive, depending on how/where you’re buying your milk and at what price.

At the time of writing, Aldi sell 4 pints of milk for £1.45 and you’d use 1/8th of a bottle, making the milk cost 18p. 50p for the sachet + 18p for the milk = 68p for a dessert serving 2-4 people.

Of course, if you’re buying milk in single pints, the Aldi price for those today is 79p/pint, so that does raise the price considerably. I’m increasingly relying on using powdered milk as I don’t buy much fresh milk these days; I just make up the powdered milk with water and add the sachet.

How Many Flavours?

Sainsburys currently sell four great flavours:

  • Butterscotch Whippy Dessert
  • Strawberry Whippy Dessert
  • Banana Whippy Dessert
  • Chocolate Whippy Dessert

How to Use Whippy Desserts

One packet is typically enough for four small portions, so you might find one packet suits you for two portions to eat once made up, or three portions if used with other ingredients. I tend to use less milk than the packet suggests, which gives a slightly firmer mousse.

All you do is mix the contents of the sachet with 300ml/½ pint of milk and whisk it (by hand or with a whisk or mixer) for about a minute; you’ll see it fluffing up and firming up pretty quickly. Once mixed they go into the fridge and they set into a soft and fluffy mousse, which takes about 20 minutes.

I use my little lidded pots and pour the mix into the pots, then put the lid on – and they’re fine in the fridge to keep for 2-3 days.

You can just eat whipped desserts on their own – which is what I tend to do most of the time.

Other options include using a whippy dessert as a layer in a home made trifle, if you fancy a change from a custard layer…. or just topping with some instant or real whipped cream.

Cheesecake: Another alternative is to use a whippy dessert in a cheesecake form. Why not try a biscuit base, topped with a layer of sliced bananas, then either butterscotch or chocolate whippy dessert and, finally, topped with some chocolate buttons or grated chocolate! I used to make this with blancmange years ago, but a chocolate whippy dessert works similarly.
